Art illiterate

06 Nov 2025

In a discussion a couple days ago my father called me art illiterate. I don’t think he’s wrong. But does it really matter?

Line and wash sketches. Two pages in a sketchbook. The image on the left is of a church and was the homework for Day 2 of a course. The images on the right are the same image, done differently. There are many hand written notes about what kind of pen, ink, and watercolor used.

How to get started?

03 Nov 2025

I’ve been asked for tips and hints on how to get started with sketching. While I’m far from an expert, here are some things I wish I’d known earlier on.

Dip pen and ink sketch. A lighthouse on a rock.

Sketching vs drawing

02 Nov 2025

Sketching and drawing are closely related. Lots of people use the terms interchangeably. But there are differences between the two.

A small and thin watercolor palette with 16 small pans for colors, and 2 mixing wells, a swatch card of all the colors, on top of a small purple zip up pouch. The pouch is branded Art Toolkit. There are waterbrushes and pens in pen slots. And two magnetic fridge clips

My portable sketching kit - Art Toolkit

01 Nov 2025

This is my “ultra portable” sketching kit that I’ve been using for a couple weeks. Ok, so there’s smaller out there. But this is pretty limited. And darn good so far!

Skills vs Talent

29 Oct 2025

So many people tell me I’m talented. Many people on social media say they aren’t talented. I don’t think it’s about talent though. It’s about skills.

Line and wash sketch. A small yellow cabin on wheels, viewed in profile. It has a side door taking up 50% of the side, and a small rectangular port.

Quick one while waiting for take out

29 Oct 2025

Track inspection car I sketched while waiting for take out. It was right around sunset on a cloudy day, so I was losing light quickly.

Line and wash sketch. The back of a small car with people in it viewed through the rear window. In front of the car is the back of a trailer RV. A white pickup truck is trying to get in front of the RV from the right. In the midground is the border control, with two closed gates with red signs about them, and one open gate with green sign about it. Some traffic cones are creating lines to follow. A mountain in the distance with a grey sky full of menacing clouds.

Quick one at border crossing

29 Oct 2025

This is one of my quick on-location series. The line up at the border crossing was very slow to progress. I had time to leave the car in park and quickly sketch my surroundings. Buildings, cars, etc.

Protect the highlights

27 Oct 2025

I was listening to the Beyond the Lens podcast. One guest said “Embrace the highlights, protect the shadows”. This is a common saying with photography.

Line and wash sketch. The scene is of a person, viewed from the back, taking a photo of another person standing at the entrance of an old arcade. This person is standing on one leg and appears to be quite playful. There are other people walking in the arcade in the distance. The arcade has a semi-circular roof.

Good life

This is one of my quick on-location series. I did this one sitting in my car before going grocery shopping!

Line and wash sketch.

First quick one - tree

17 Oct 2025

This is my first “quick on-location” series. That tree got my attention.

Line and wash sketch. There is a rectangular turret on the right of the house. The rest of the house has an A shaped roof with terracota tiles. The walls of the house are a reddish beige. The entrance door is in the turret, there are two windows in the main part of the house, with 3 smaller windows on the roof. The numbers 1570 are embedded in the wall in large cast iron numbers.

An old house in Brussels

An old house I did from a photo I took. And when I say “old”, I mean… Built in 1570

Felix Scheinberger sitting on a large deadwood log, with his sketchbook on his lap. There are many people around him, some sitting on the log, others standing behind or in front of him.

A sketchwalk with Felix Scheinberger

04 Oct 2025

Urban Sketchers Vancouver organized a sketch walk with special guest Felix Scheinberger. I was lucky enough to be able to go, and learn a LOT!

Line and wash sketch. A bridge in Vancouver, viewed from a pathway at water level. There are two large square towers holding the bridge up. Several people are in the scene. One sitting on a bench on the left. Two sitting on a low stone wall on the right. Two cleaning up rubbish from the water's edge. The sky is grey and heavy. The tone of the image is dull - it was an overcast day with moments of drizzle.

First, and hopefully not last, outing with Urban Sketchers Vancouver. We did a sketch walk that afternoon. I spent about 40 minutes on this sketch, while chatting with other people.

A small garage to the right of the house, towards the back. A tall evergreen tree directly behind the house. Hand written nose states: Yorktown, SK, July 2022, Stop for a few hours on our way across Canada. There are swatches of the four colors used to paint this.

Line or wash first?

05 Aug 2025

Should you put down your ink lines first? Or your color first? There are different thinking about this. I typically put down the ink first, and color later. But I’m exploring the idea of changing!

Line and wash sketch. Huge sandstone arch viewed from the bottom of a small hill. There is a flower detailed in a cartouche, and some text. The text reads: Wilson's Arch, September 28, 2019. It was such a bright sunny day that day. But the wind was fierce. I went up the cliff to the opening arch, glad for the string holding my hat. A fine sand flew into the wind. Making it feel like I was getting sandblasted. Didn't stay long at that unplanned stop, but it was nice.

Wilson's Arch

08 May 2022

Crossing Utah, we came across Wilson’s Arch. A huge sandstone arch. Took photos. Sketched it years later!

Line and wash sketch. A landscape of a mesa in Wyoming. There is a cartouche drawing of the stone marker at the entrance of Fort Laramie. A handwritten note says July 20, 2019. Visited Fort LarAmie, splendid nisit, On our may out, saw these Mesas. Took a mhile to get here. Stormy, overcast skies were a worry. Another tornado? The landscape in Wyoming is just fantastic. I do understand people who find it boring! Can't wait to go back.
